FAQs

Questions before you saddle up?

Joining Makerteers

Makerteers is for makers, crafters, designers and early-stage product entrepreneurs who want to make more of what they make.

You might be pre-trading, already selling as a sole trader, or running a limited company.

The main thing is that you are passionate about making, designing or crafting, and want to build something stronger around it.

Makerteers has funding to build a connected community of Scottish Makerteers, but all nationalities are welcome to join our online community, join in, and take advantage of the online resources.

For in-person events, participants should either be based in Scotland, currently trading in Scotland, or aiming to trade from Scotland in the future.

We are also considering future programmes with in-person events in other parts of the UK. Please contact us if you would like to be kept informed.

No.

You can be pre-business, testing an idea, already selling as a side hustle, trading as a sole trader, or running a limited company.

Makerteers is designed to help you move from Maybe to Market — or make your existing maker business stronger.

No, but you should already have the craft, design or making skills to create one.

You do not need a finished product idea to attend. However, if you are already working on products — such as jewellery, furniture, ceramics, textiles, leather goods, tools, homeware or other crafted objects — the training will be immediately easier to apply.

Makerteers will also bring real product examples into sessions so participants can learn through practical, real-world applications.

No. Makerteers is not designed to teach specific craft skills such as pottery, jewellery-making, woodworking or textiles.

The programme is designed to help makers make more, together — through practical training in Ai-enabled Operations Automation, small-batch manufacturing, brand and mindset.

We aim to connect with the many brilliant schools, organisations and craft educators already teaching making skills across Scotland.

Makerteers focuses on four practical areas: Operations Automation; Making at Scale; Building your Brand, Mastering your Mind.

That means learning how to reduce admin, improve marketing, test demand, price better, plan production, work with suppliers, grow your customer base and build a more confident maker business.

Programme Format

Yes.

The launch programme is fully funded, so there is no programme fee for selected participants.

Places for in-person workshops will be limited, so early registration matters.

The first Makerteers events launch in September 2026. With launches in Glasgow & Edinburgh.

Register for the events to reveal the location and details.

Register early.

Places are limited, and suitable early applicants will be prioritised for in-person workshop spaces.

Places will be offered through a mix of suitability and order of registration.

First and foremost, we are looking for people who are passionate about making, designing or crafting.

Use the online form to tell us what you make, what you are interested in, and why you want to attend.

All registered participants will be able to access online resources.

Where possible, webinar links or online access will also be made available for relevant sessions.

No. There is no minimum or maximum number of workshops you must attend.

Each workshop will be designed as a standalone session, so you can attend the sessions most relevant to you.

We are designing the programme so a full set of workshops is delivered in both Edinburgh & Glasgow.

If you can we would encourage you to attend a full set across the 4 areas (Operations Automation; Making at Scale; Building your Brand; Mastering your Mind).

The main Makerteers programme is aimed at participants aged 18 and over. Participants aged 16 or 17 may also take part if accompanied by someone aged 18 or over.

We also plan to run a one-off Mini Makerteers workshop for school-age participants, focused on early-stage entrepreneurship, design and making.

To register interest in Mini Makerteers, contact join@makerteers.com.

Workshops and Locations

Makerteers will run activity across Scotland, with a focus on accessible regional venues.

We are designing the programme so a full set of workshops is delivered in both Edinburgh & Glasgow. With further sessions and activity across regions including Dundee, the North and the Borders.

No.

Travel costs are not currently covered.

However, we will make every effort to choose venues that are easily accessible within the chosen regions.

Yes.

Participants will receive a training certificate for each course completed.

The final Makerteers wrap-up event will also provide an opportunity to showcase your products, services and how you have applied your training.

Yes.

The final Makerteers event will include an opportunity for participants to showcase their products, offers and progress.

It is designed to help makers share what they have built, learned and improved through the programme.

Manufacturing and Selling

You are responsible for deciding what you share publicly.

You will not be required to disclose confidential product details to take part.

If you choose to share your ideas, please be aware that publicly disclosing an invention or concept may make it more difficult, or in some cases impossible, to patent it in the future.

Makerteers will not manufacture your products for you.

It will help you understand how to move from one-off through repeatable small-batch production on to scaled manufacturing, including production planning, supplier discussions, quality consistency and technical readiness.

In some cases, Makerteers may also be able to signpost you to suitable manufacturing partners.

Yes.

Makerteers is built with a global outlook.

The aim is to help Scottish makers build the training, tools, connections and pathways to grow customer bases beyond local markets, taking the Made by Makers in Scotland story to wider national and global audiences.
